“Ocean liners as the luxury of industrial civilization and their echo through the architecture of Le Corbusier”

This masters’ degree work, completed at UNIVERSITY PARIS I PANTHEON SORBONNE, was obtained under the supervision of Jean Laude. This work brought a new perspective in the understanding of Le Corbusier’s architecture. It has also influenced Pierre Court in his projects.

The “machine for living”, as Le Corbusier liked to call it in his manifestos, the floating city, order and functionality as the ideal of dwelling, synonyms of progress and happiness for mankind, guided our imagination at the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century (until the 60’s).

Ocean liners were the realization of his theories and the model to follow in terms of housing for Le Corbusier. Indoor streets, running water, dwelling automation... Those things existed on cruise ships, which were real floating cities.

Jules Verne had it all figured out in his novel A Floating City in reference to the Great Eastern ship. Le Corbusier never stopped claiming it in his writing and sketches, and got his inspiration from it at the point of inventing the Modulor.

Indeed, how not be impressed by the Normandie, superb engineering marvel of the industrial era, but also apotheosis of the ship in its rational beauty. Ocean liners fascinated Le Corbusier and made the public dream as well.
